Escrow timers
The single most expensive misunderstanding in an order is thinking that patience is free. There is a clock, it does not care that you are being reasonable, and it releases without you.
Why an automatic release exists
Without one, a buyer who disappears would lock a vendor payment indefinitely. Sellers would not accept that risk and escrow would stop working. The timer is what makes the arrangement acceptable to the other side, which is why it exists rather than being an oversight.
What the timer does not know
Whether the package arrived. Whether you are away. Whether the vendor asked you to wait a few more days. It counts down from dispatch and releases, and every one of those situations ends with the money gone and no dispute available.
The only thing that stops it
Opening a dispute. Not messaging the vendor, not waiting, not intending to raise it tomorrow. A dispute pauses the clock, and it can be withdrawn afterwards if the package turns up. Opening one is reversible, letting a timer expire is not.
Reading the deadline correctly
Find out roughly what the window is before you need it rather than during. If a package is late and the expiry is approaching, that is the moment to act even when the vendor has been communicative and reassuring, because their reassurance does not extend the clock.
Extensions
Some platforms let a buyer extend rather than dispute. Where that exists it is the polite option and it is genuinely useful for a slow but honest shipment. It is also not a substitute for a dispute when a vendor has gone quiet, because extending rewards silence with more time.
The rule in one line
Late is a reason to open a dispute, never a reason to confirm receipt and never a reason to do nothing.
What to do before you need to know
Find the window once, on an order that is going fine, and you will never have to work it out under pressure. It is usually stated on the order page and it is rarely the number people assume. Knowing it turns a late package from an anxious situation into a scheduling question.
The asymmetry worth remembering
Opening a dispute you did not need costs you nothing but a little goodwill and can be withdrawn. Letting a timer run out costs the entire order and cannot be undone. When those are the two options, the cautious choice is the active one rather than the patient one.
